Leachate Treatment
Waste Minimisation Services (WMS) can treat Landfill Leachate from all types of site. For both high-flow active landfill sites or low-flow capped sites, we can design and install cost effective systems that will remove a wide range of contaminants such as Ammonia, Heavy Metals and Hydrocarbons and reduce COD to acceptable levels. We can tailor our treatment to meet the discharge requirements for foul sewer or even surface water, if required.
We use a multi-step approach which includes filtration, fixed bed media absorption and catalysed oxidation.
Our systems are able to operate reliably at widely variable flow rates without compromising their effectiveness.
How it Works
Leachate usually has a high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) caused principally by the presence of Ammonia. It may also contain heavy metals or other hazardous contaminants.
Firstly the leachate is pumped though a filter which take out any solid material down to 25 microns. Next it is passed through a fixed bed media. This can be blended to match the contaminants being targeted. It will also remove a proportion of the ammonia.
Next the leachate passed through an oxidation loop. Here a neutral pH Fenton's reagent, in the presence of a catalyst, which converts the remaining Ammonia to Nitrates and Water. The water can then be tested prior to discharge.
Key Advantages
- Lower capital costs.
- Lower operating costs than other technologies.
- Low power consumption.
- Small footprint.
- Able to cope with widely differing flows without affecting performance.
- Semi-automated with only occasional manual intervention required.
- Can treat a wide range of contaminants.
Low maintenance passive system.
