De-Watering

Industries such as mining and tunneling can utilise large quantities of Bentonite slurry which then needs disposing of off site. Other operations such as jetting can also produce large quantities of either hazardous or non-hazardous waste water with solids.

Waste Minimisation Services (WMS) can provide processes to remove most of the water from these waste streams leaving a smaller quantity of solids for disposal. This can significantly reducing disposal costs as well as reducing risk and carbon footprint by minimising transportation.

In the case that the slurry contains hazardous materials, the resultant water can be further treated so it is safe for onsite discharge.

How it Works

Bentonite slurries are typically just 3 to 5% solid material mixed with water. Once the Bentonite is spent they can present a major problem to dispose of even if they are non-hazardous. The WMS system firstly screens out large solids and then passes the slurry through a filter press. This can produce filter cake with the moisture content reduced to around 35%. On a 3% slurry this will represent a 95% reduction in the volume for disposal. Also the filter cake can often be disposed of at very little cost.

The water from the system can be reused onsite or discharged to sewer onsite.

For waste streams with hazardous contaminants an additional filtration and media adsorption module can be added to remove these.

Key Advantages

- Mobile systems that can be set up onsite

- Small footprint

Significant reduction in volume of material for off-site disposal

- Waste stream converted to a solid filter cake for easier handling and cost effective disposal

- Water can be reused or discharged onsite

- Hazardous contamination can be removed from the water

Additional Waste

Water Treatment

WMS can treat or remove various chemicals and contaminants including:

  • Hexavalent Chrome (Chrome vi)

  • Oils

  • Cyanide

  • Iron (and Iron Cyanide)

  • Zinc

  • Nickel

  • Copper

  • Magnesium

  • Potassium

  • Lead

  • Radioactive Material

  • Mercury

  • Ammonia

  • Phosphate

  • PAHs

  • PCBs

  • BTEX

  • We can treat waste with emulsions and reverse emulsions
